Another post about Modesty

You know the verse...

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Maybe I'm the only one guilty of this, but I have often pulled this verse out of context, then wondered what on earth it looked like to eat and drink to God's glory.

To have a better understanding of what this verse means, let's go back to verses 23-24...

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.

Paul talks about this a lot which must mean it is both important and a very real issue... when we choose to do, say, eat, drink, or wear something, even if we don't personally think there is anything wrong with it, if it causes our "neighbor" to stumble we are sinning. We need to consider our fellow believers, especially those who are weaker, before our own liberties.

How does this have to do with modesty? Some of the arguments against modesty are...

  • Why should I have to change the way I dress because of someone else's issues?
  • The guy who can't keep his eyes from wandering should learn to control himself. It's not my problem.
  • I don't see anything wrong with it so why should I change?
Paul says,

Whether, then, you eat or drink (or choose clothes to wear), do all to the glory of God. Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.

Considering the weaker brother over myself is glorifying God. Isn't that my point in life - to glorify my Creator?

So then let us pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. Romans 14:19

A Couple of our Potato Faves

Harvest time is in full swing and we've been thoroughly enjoying the spoils.

Our potato plants looked rough and bugs got the best of some of them. But we still got at least one good potato per plant. Most plants got us 2-3 quality potatoes. And since we planted 100 plants, we're doing pretty good.

We plan to can a good chunk of them, but until then we need to eat up! So I want to share our two favorite potato recipes as of late.

One you have probably seen floating around Pinterest which is where I found it.

1. Lipton Onion Potatoes

This delicious pic is from the blog this recipe is originally from. Go visit her.
These are sooo easy and stinkin' delicious.

  • Slice your potatoes and place in baking dish as seen in pic.
  • Melt 1 cup of butter in small bowl then mix in two packets of Lipton Onion soup.
  • Pour over potatoes.
  • Cover with foil.
  • Bake at 375 for about 45 min.

When I make this for just our family, I cut the butter, onion soup, and baking dish in half. The full recipe can handle my extended family well! It's perfect for good sized gatherings!

(There's a recipe floating around FB with a homemade recipe for dry onion soup. Might have to look into that).

2. Fried Potato Patties (aka Homemade crispy seasoned french fries)

I had planned to (have Derek) grill potatoes so I cut them in these slices. Then I realized we already had burgers and peppers and onions on the grill so I did a quick search from some homemade fries and this recipe was a huge hit!

Ingredients:
Potatoes sliced however you desire (place in cold water to prevent browning)
1 C unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp pepper
1/2ish C water
Canola oil to cover bottom of frying pan up to about half inch

Instructions:
Heat oil in frying pan on med-high heat.
Sift flour, garlic and onion powders, salt and pepper, paprika into a bowl. Gradually pour in water until the mixture looks something like this...

Dip potatoes in batter one at a time and place into hot oil. Fry until they are crispy and golden brown.
Sprinkle a little extra salt on top and thoroughly enjoy!

I've always loved potatoes, but these recipes take them to a whole new level!

Happy 5th Birthday, Marie Love!

Dear Sweet Goob,

You're 5. I'm having trouble grasping that.

July 2012
July 2012
You claim that you aren't growing up but every day you get a little bit taller, a little bit smarter, a little bit more beautiful. I couldn't be more proud of you.

August 2012
Your current loves are princesses, playing outside, dancing and singing, and being a big sis.

September 2012
September 2012
I love you're girly-ness. You sometimes introduce yourself as "Marie Repunzel." You love to wear dresses and headbands and bows. You hate when I brush your hair but love when I braid it.

December 2012
You had your first year of dance class and absolutely loved it. Your face was painted with pure joy during every class. And we were overwhelmed with pride watching you perform. Throughout the year we were able to see you gradually pull out of your shell. You learned confidence and listening to instruction. And it seemed to bring out your hidden athletic ability.

January 2013
February 2013
We are working on being grateful so that we don't whine quite so much. We'll get there. What is most important is that you recognize that you are a sinner and you need the one and only Savior, Jesus Christ. There are some days that I just cannot wait until the Spirit lives in your heart for so many reasons!

March 2013
April 2013
I love you more than life, Sweet Girl, and will continue to pray for you every single day of my life. I know God has some amazing plans for your life. I can't wait to watch you grow, just please do it slowly!

May 2013
I love you, Goob!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Jack Edward!

August 2012
Dear Jackman,

Your dimples get me every time. I love that you look just like your dad.

October 2012
November 2012

At 3 you are fully potty-trained. (You did that mostly on your own). You love to climb, swing, ride bikes, and jump on the trampoline. I love your current version of the alphabet...

A B C F G H L M N O 17 18 next time sing with me.

November 2012

You are also passionate about balls, ovals, and the color blue.

December 2012

Your vocabulary is growing by the day and you actually have a knack for colors. You've started singing like your sister... whatever words you think of to whatever tune you feel like. And, just like your dad, you love to hum!

February 2013

Your Jacobs stubbornness and fierce determination to be independent has added a few spankings to your life, but your sensitive heart makes spanking incredibly difficult and something your Dad and I both do our best to avoid!

March 2013
March 2013
I've always prayed that God would protect your sensitive heart. I am still learning how to handle that "duper" sensitivity! But I love it and love you more than life.

April 2013
April 2013
I will always continue to pray for you every single night as your beautiful blues rest and you breath heavily through your pug nose and perfect little mouth. I pray for your health and protection, but most importantly for your adoption into the family of Christ followed closely by a life passionately lived for the Lord.
May 2013
May 2013
Never stop giving "big hugs" and air kisses.
